Why Online Visibility is Imperative for Entrepreneurs

The power of visibility can never be underestimated.

Margaret Cho

Did you know that around 1.32 billion people are considered daily active users on Facebook?2
Or that 42% of marketers report Facebook as being critical or important to their business?3
Facebook is a HUGE player in the social media marketing realm, second only to Instagram…which they currently own.

That means, if you’re a creative entrepreneur, not only do you need to be on Facebook you need to be SEEN on Facebook, because success doesn’t happen in a vacuum.

What Does Visibility Even Mean?

Visibility online is the overall presence of a brand or its products in the general consumer environment. A business can have a great website, but how are users expected to find it if it’s not visible?4
In layman’s terms, it means making sure that your products and website are seen and searchable.
What happens when someone types your company name into Google or Facebook?
If you aren’t in the top of the search results, you’re not visible.
If you’re not visible, no one can buy your stuff because they don’t even know you exist.

Why is visibility important?

This whole idea of visibility…creates a pretty powerful lever. In the new transparency era, you are able to make change you would otherwise have difficulty making.

Tim O'Reilly

There are a handful of reasons why online visibility is important.

First and foremost, it lets users find your site on their own. 6

If you want to make that sweet, sweet cheddar you need as many new, unique visitors to be exposed to you and your products as possible.

Another key reason that being visible online is important is that it helps develops Know, Like, and Trust.
Know, Like, and Trust are the three KEY elements which allow customers and clients to percieve you as having something valuable that they want to BUY.

How many times have you bought something online from a complete stranger? Especially, at a low price.
(Or….are you more likely to hesitate and wonder if you’re going to get scammed or have your identity stolen?)
Being seen online improves your branding and reputation and helps you to stand out from your competitors.

ESPECIALLY, if your branding and message are CONSISTENT.

Consistency is KING! Don’t give the impression of being some flaky, fly-by-night snake oil salesman.
Make sure you show up when you say you will.

No same old same old for you! You want to outshine your competitors so that you’re so far out of their league you aren’t even actually competing.

Why is Facebook so Important?

Every 60 seconds on Facebook: 510,000 comments are posted, 293,000 statuses are updated, and 136,000 photos are uploaded.7

There are HUGE amounts of people actively engaging and interacting with the people and products that THEY think matter.

This presents the perfect opportunity to address their needs and carefully groom them with intent and creativity.
If you’re still wondering why Facebook is soOOoOO important think of it this way: How many of your friends, family, and past clients are NOT on Facebook?

Business 101 Tip: go where the clients are and chances are YOUR clients hang out on Facebook!

Facebook Metrics

In case you’re like me and love data and metrics, here’s some more information that might persuade you to jump on the Facebook bandwagon posthaste:

  • One in five page views in the United States occurs on Facebook.8
  • Worldwide, there are over 2.01 billion monthly active Facebook users for June 2017 (Facebook MAUs) which is a 17 percent increase year over year.9
  • Instagram now has over 600 million users according to Instagram’s report December 21, 2016.
  • Facebook CONTINUES to reign in popularity over other social media channels.10

Why Now is the Time to Jump On the Bandwagon?

In 2017 Facebook changed their mission statement:
“Founded in 2004, Facebook’s mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. People use Facebook to stay connected with friends and family, to discover what’s going on in the world, and to share and express what matters to them.”11

With their current push in video (the ultimate Know, Like, and Trust builder) and the multitude of tools they have available by way of Ads, Facebook Groups, and their ownership of Instagram – this is the IDEAL time to go for broke on that platform.

Facebook has the tools and resources to level the playing field between you and your competitors. You just have to be SEEN and HEARD.

Btw, you don’t have to make some monumental leap and spend a ton of money in equipment and ads to increase your visibility.

If you have time, creativity, (a smart phone) and the ability to be consistent you can create great posts and build a very sizeable following of very rabid fans.

Now you know why you need visibility You can jump on over to my follow up article “Gaining Visibility on Facebook” for some suggestions on how to make these changes.

That means there’s only one final thing for me to address, and that’s to be yourself.

If you take nothing else away from this article remember to that regardless of ANYTHING else, your branding must be unabashedly, unashamedly YOU.

As entrepreneurs we often feel like we need to reinvent the wheel…but that’s not the case.

The VERY best thing you can do is show people an improved wheel, but doing it with the style and panache that only you can display by showcasing your personality.

People want to be a part of your tribe because YOU inspire them.

People will flock to you because YOU light that fire under their butt, or within their soul, with your passion, drive, and determination.

So, ALWAYS remember that no matter what, you need to be true to yourself.

If you keep this one thing in mind, you’ll never be at a loss for true fans and people who absolutely adore both you and your products.
Good luck out there!
