Knit Now ~ Chunky Knits Winter 2019 (19 Aug)
We’re partnering with our friends at Deramores to create a mini collection of patterns for their Studio Chunky yarn. For this collection we’re particularly looking for speedy, simple makes. A little bit of texture or colourwork is fine but keep it on the easy end - we want these patterns to be beginner-friendly. We want to see modern makes for women, babies and the home.
Check out our website for the moodboard link and more info.
Submission requirements
Your submission should include a sketch and accompanying paragraph describing the item, a photograph or scan of your swatch and ideas for yarn choices. The submission should be presented in a PDF document, with your name and email address on every page. All information should be included in the submission document, including pictures. Please also tell us where we can find other examples of your work – a link to your Ravelry designer profile is ideal. You will be commissioned to write a full pattern (including any alternative sizes) and knit a sample. We will take care of photography.
IMPORTANT: Please create a separate PDF for each idea and name the file in the following format: YourName _PatternName_KNchunky.pdf
Deadline
The deadline for submissions will be 9am UK time on Monday 19th August. I am aiming to get all commissions sent out straight away. Deadlines for final patterns and samples will be 17th September. This is a tighter deadline than I usually work to but please remember that these will all be quick, chunky knits.

Knotions - STEM Inspired Issue (1 Sept)
We’re doing an issue inspired by STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)! Patterns for any item inspired by facts/concepts/etc. from any of the STEM fields will be considered! There are at least 4 reasons for it:
- Knitting and Crochet are actually two ways to show the beauty of STEM, and we want to celebrate and promote that!
- Women are under-represented in STEM and I want to do my part to change that. While there are also male designers (talented and prolific ones at that), this is a highly female profession. Even if the entire issue isn’t designed by females, every person has young women in their life and it’s good to keep pushing this to the forefront.
- (Personal, but still worth mentioning) My degrees are in Math and Computer Science and I’ve come to realize how TRULY LUCKY I was to have some fabulous people influencing me at an early age (and not caring if I was a boy or a girl). This goes from my parents, to many family members with a definite special mention to my Uncle Angelo (I never realized just how lucky I was).
- How cool is it that our motto is craft smarter?
And now that my bit of personal history is behind us, back to business.
We came across a BUNCH of articles that applied, so here are a few:
http://www.stemforher.org/learn/stem-facts/
https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/86016/6-math-concepts...
Remember, we do all photography ourselves! This means a simpler submission process for you and a more consistent look for our readers - a Win Win (we hope!).
We’re VERY excited about this and can’t wait to see what you all come up with!
All:
- You send your pattern to Knotions by September 1st. Please include in your romance copy (at the beginning of the pattern), what makes it STEM.
- We decide if it fits in the STEM issue or not. If not, it might fit into another issue but we’ll ask for your permission first.
- We tech edit it, and once you approve it, that’s the pattern that will be run.
US submitters:
- You mail your FO to the photographer by December 1st.
- The photographer will have it for about 6-10 weeks and then MAIL IT BACK TO YOU.
- Once you receive it, it’s yours to keep.
Non-US submitters:
- The pattern goes out to a sample knitter to make the item to be photographed.
- The photographer will have it for about 6-10 weeks and then MAIL IT BACK TO THE SAMPLE KNITTER.
Deadline: There are NO PROPOSALS for this issue. That means that we will not make any decisions until after the September 1st deadline. There are lots of details above.
Knitty Winter 2019 (15 Sept)
Submission Themes: Winter is prime knitting season, where you can comfortably knit anywhere (and probably want to, for the extra warmth on your lap), and wear most everything you’ve knit. So we want to give our readers lots of lush coziness to enjoy. We want sweaters, big sweaters. Cardigans or pullovers, and vests too. We want lots of texture. We want the warmest fibers including wool, silk, mohair, alpaca, etc. Accessories are welcomeas well, especially quick-to-knit holiday gifts. Think unconventional when it comes to accessories…a tube of one stitch pattern makes a cowl, but what would make that cowl really unique?
What we love most is innovation: what twist can you bring to your design that will catch the eye of our readers? Be creative.
Deadline: Sept 15, 2019

If you’re a non-US submitter

- The photographer will have it for about 6 weeks and then MAIL IT BACK TO THE SAMPLE KNITTER
- You’ll still be responsible for the other things - pattern support and promotion are the 2 big things.

Hello designers! My name is Debbie, and I run Sweet Paprika Designs together with my sister Elizabeth. We create luxurious hand-dyed yarns in our studio in Montreal, which are available online through our own website and in person through our retailers across Canada.
We are interested in both knit and crochet designs.
Compensation/Support/Rights: Sweet Paprika will provide the agreed upon yarn to the designer. The designer will be responsible for all aspects of self-publishing their pattern, within the agreed upon timeframe. The designer will retain full rights to their pattern. Sweet Paprika will request use of the designer’s images for promotional purposes.
Submission Requirements: Please submit your proposal by email to info@sweetpaprikadesigns.com. The proposal should include a sketch, swatch, description of the project, and yarn requirements. Please also include links to your Ravelry page, website, etc.
Knitcircus Yarns ~ Yarn Support Program (Ongoing)
Knitcircus Studio creates hand-dyed Gradient, Impressionist Gradient, Speckled Handpaint and Semi-Solid Merino-based yarns in cake sizes 50-150g, and Matching Socks Sets in Small, Medium and Large. We are interested in working with designers by providing traditional yarn support for your patterns.
We don’t have specific theme or deadline requirements; we want to work with you to enhance your vision and match it with the perfect yarn and dye technique. The only requirement we have is that the pattern use exclusively Knitcircus Yarn and does not call for using stash yarn/other company’s yarn along with our yarn to obtain the desired result. You may list other suggested yarns in the pattern, but the knitter/crocheter must be able to successfully complete the project using Knitcircus Yarn in off-the-shelf quantities.
If you wish to design a pattern using Knitcircus yarn, please contact jaala@knitcircus.com (please not through Ravmessages) to communicate your idea, yarn needs and timeline and we will be happy to work with you.
We will provide the yarn for your project and will publicize the finished project in tandem with your release date on social media, and may create a kit for sale on our webstore, directing customers to purchase the pattern directly from you or your publication. If you wholesale your patterns, please let us know so we can purchase them for sale in our online and brick-and-mortar store.
Let's get your inspiration flowing and raise your visibility.
We challenge you to submit to one publication a month!
Remember: Rejections don't kill you, they certainly haven't killed me. Plus, you will have a new design ready to self publish.
